China and Rome China and Rome were astonishing civilizations that managed to advance technology and civilations. Both civilizations were rapidly growing and making changes to the world. The two cultures were pretty similar, yet very different. Their religions were something to be modest about. When it came to religion it helped the decline of both societies, by religion changing. When it came to technology though, its change is what caused the societies to flourish. As for education the both leaders of China and Rome worked on making it easier, evident from the letters, for common people to gain knowledge. Changing things in their kingdom clearly took time. The main thing was the grand canal which brought water from one city to another and acted as a road way. The Grand Canal is the world s longest man- made waterway, being 1,800 kilometers long. The canal connects the present cities of Beijing in the north and Hangzhou in the south, which served as dynastic capitals in the past, and contains 24 locks and 60 bridges. Since most of China s major rivers flow from west to east, the fact that the Grand Canal runs north and south provides it as an important connector between the Yangtze River valley and the Yellow River valley. A good example of their care for water is in Document 1 â€Å"I request that you establish water conservation offices in each district and staff them with people who are experienced in the ways of water.† When it says this you can tell how much they care about the water. Both societies clearly had a good grip on the control of water, for their benefit and their pleasure. The last topic that shows the intellect of the people and the emperor, it seems that these peoples were highly intelligent. Eveline: Trapped by Guilt The story Eveline, by James Joyce is one of indescribable loyalty and extreme choices. Two themes dominate the story: everything good must end, and it is the victim of abuse that often feels guilt. The guilt that Eveline feels forces her to make choices that trap her into a pitiful existence. The setting of Eveline is a typical Irish town. Eveline’s mother is dead and her father, though living, has a less than stellar character. He is abusive towards her two brothers and constantly threatens her. Another example of his character or lack thereof is his racist attitude. This is evident when he yells, Damned Italians! Then one day, Eveline meets Frank who lives in Buenos Aires.†¦show more content†¦She would be trapped. Of course, if she chooses to go with Frank then she would begin her new life with love and happiness. This brings up another theme; everyone is looking for contentment. The ironic part of this is that she looks for fulfillment, but once she finds it, she turns away from the source, Frank. Another theme is that everyone wants to feel secure. People want guarantees in life even when none should be needed, as in the case of love. This theme corresponds with the idea of trust. Eveline should trust Frank if she loves him. This means that no matter what, she should know that as long as she is with Frank, she will be fine. However, because of her insecurity, she chooses to stay with her father. She wants what all people want, security. In her home anyway she had shelter and food; she had those whom she had known all her life about her. That statement illustrates perfectly how Eveline seems to loath change and anything that is alien to her normal routine. In peoples lives, it is human nature to strive for structure. She must also think that nothing good ever lasts. She takes the pessimistic view in that all good things end. Along these same lines, another major theme is fear. She is consumed by her fear of the unknown (i.e. going with Frank to Buenos Aires and not k nowing how they will survive). If the manager is able to empower its employees, they sure will participate and contribute towards the teams success (Bass Green, 2014) Dont assume others know what you do-It has a simple meaning, share whatever information one has, assuming that people already know about something, may keep the other team members in complete oblivion to the said points. Hence, in order to become a good team player, assumptions are to be kept out of the room and sharing should be the core value (Sugden Punch, 2014) Share, analyse and decide-It is essential for the group members to follow a three step rule in any meeting with the team. Step 1 is, sharing what everyone knows, that is like putting down the information they already possess, Step 2 is analysing the before mentioned points and at the same time evaluating alternatives, lastly, have a healthy discussion before reaching on the final conclusion. Formation of teams Team formation is not something which happens by accident, it requires great efforts. Lets see some of the ways by which an effective team can be created: Finding Establishing leadership- In absence of effective leadership, a team has no direction to move forward in, hence the primary step is to have an effective leader Establishing relationship with each employee- For an employee to trust his leader, he should have an environment which promotes healthy communication. This will help to build trust with the leader/manager and this trust and relationship further leads to teamwork Building relationship between the employees- It is essential to have team belonging in the team members. This can be ensured by having team building activities, feedback sessions, fun and play session, parties etc. This will ensure ease of tension and friction between the team members and they can work effectively towards the goals of organization Develop and build team work- As explained in the points above, building team work is not that easy task. It takes time, dedication and patience to tackle the challenges posed by the individual team members and at the same time focus on the deadline of the work.
